About Dr. Surrago
A prominent health and healing expert, Dr. Surrago practices medicine in accordance with the Laws of Nature. Her methodology resembles the works of Henry Lindlahr, M.D. and Constantine Hering M.D. who both were keen observers of the healing process and used the power of the human body and nature to heal their patients.
Dr. Surrago practices Naturopathic Medicine, which is supporting and encouraging the cells to heal from the inside, as opposed to forcing or shutting down cellular mechanisms through medications. She works to alter the cellular microenvironment, which is the fluid that surrounds each cell and the interactions between each cell. She does this through prescribing proper rest, nutrition, ecotherapy, monitored fasting and sweating, exercise, hydrotherapy, homeopathy, massage, osteopathic adjustments and optimistic thinking.
What is Naturopathic Medicine?
Naturopathic Medicine is a system of medicine that recognizes that the body has the ability to heal itself when it is in alignment with the Laws of Nature, and that every symptom expressed by the body is an attempt at healing. This system of medicine has it’s roots in the early 1900s in Germany when a movement called “Nature Cure” came about in reaction to new developments in medicine such as the use of overpowering medications. The use of overpowering medications, such as pharmaceuticals, can appear to be curative, however they mostly block the normal cellular response to the causative substance. The symptoms are relieved, yet the causative factor of the disease remains. The unfortunate effects of the medications leave the body even more vulnerable by weakening the cells and never address the cause of the illness, leading to deeper levels of weakness, disease and decay.
Naturopathic Doctors are trained in the art of healing. The art of healing requires keen observation of the patient, including the deep understanding of how their body uniquely responds to stressors. Every person is different and every body expresses symptoms differently. This understanding of the patient, helps the doctor guide the patient through healing crisis and through the challenging parts of the healing process to the other end of greater strength and vitality.
Dr. Surrago completed her doctorate at Bastyr University, the world’s leading research university in Naturopathic Medicine. While attending, she was trained in the interweaving of modern medicine with naturopathy. Her training in two very different worlds of medicine has given her the ability to work with patients undergoing pharmaceutical treatment while safely bringing their body back into greater function and balance. She is known for treatment of chronic immune dysfunctions, gastrointestinal disorders, endocrine disorders and mood disorders. She has additional expertise in homeopathy, which is the use of highly diluted substances to create a healing response within the cells of the body. Due to her skill and passion for homeopathy, she served as clinical faculty at Bastyr University, teaching and overseeing her students use homeopathy successfully in the treatment of chronic illness. She currently practices out of her offices in Santa Monica, CA and Torrence, CA.
Her Calling Into Medicine
When she was 17-years-old, she woke up in the middle of the night hearing her father throwing up into the kitchen sink. She rushed to him, knowing that he had suffered from heart attacks since his mid 30s. Her dad brushed off her concern; saying it’s nothing – he feels fine. A week later, he passed away from a fatal heart attack.
Her father’s death sent her into a tailspin – emotionally and physically. A year later, she was diagnosed with Crohn Disease (Crohn's Disease), which is an autoimmune disease that attacks the gastrointestinal system, leading to major destruction of the intestines and colon. She didn’t know how to cope with the loss of her father – whom she looked up to and adored. In a short time, she lost 30 pounds. Her family doctor put her on medications and suggested soft food like pasta. She didn’t feel good about the diet, but deferred to her doctor. She always had exceptional common sense about the body and felt that the pasta diet was not right. The doctor also prescribed drugs for her condition – one of which resulted in major infection. Eventually she started listening deeply to herself about how to heal her condition and began extensive research into alternative medicine.
After graduating from Rutgers University with a degree in Mathematics, Dr. Surrago taught high school math for four years inNew Jersey. All the while, she studied health, healing and Crohn Disease from every book and research study she could lay her hands on. When she was 23 years old, she found a diet and herbal protocol that cured her condition.
